COR LUCIS LAMEN
The Recipe
By Frater M.O.

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

Once again the Holiday Season rears its ugly head bringing all the joys of fable and commercialism into cartoon animated life. Down deep I am not a bah humbug type but for me it isn't the media's crummy shopping advice and hooky Christmas specials that get under my skin. It is the sameness. It's the rushing, the crowds and congestion, the winter colds. It is the dependable monotony of the expected that keeps the holidays from being special or unique.

Going home always guarantees two things. One, my mother will tell me where I should go to return the gift she bought me... it's always from Ross (the dress for less emporium). And two, the holiday turkey will be bone dry and no amount of cold lumpy gravy can save it. In fact, one year after a particularly pathetic mummified bird appeared, I suggested it wasn't too late to throw the cat with pineapple slices into the microwave and we could all enjoy a California luau. So, the f-word in my house as I grew up was food. On the other hand, mom always outdoes herself with the stuffing... it is delicious. All this got me a-thinking'.

These two opposites have something very important in common. They both are old recipes that have remained throughout the years passed down from generation to generation. If I decide to continue part of this time-honored tradition I can insure atrocious holiday meals for many years to come.

My mother is not a delusional woman and is fully aware of her culinary status. For her, trying a new recipe is not worth the trouble. For me, it has become a goal to find the old ideas, parts of my being that has been examined and perhaps could use a better recipe. Often it is much easier to ignore better choices than to put forth the effort to effect needed change. Okay, so I have given a pretty benign example, but if you are being beaten by your spouse and you're still living in the problem or you repeatedly drive home shit-faced it is a much more serious situation.

I am not a huge fan of the Gregorian Calendar but come January first there is a ritual I will be doing and so will many others across the country. I will be acknowledging some of the old ideas that no longer work and goals I will be striving towards. I will use candles, incense, invocation and specific goals but the results I will be gunning for is willingness. The change already exists out there in the ether but my focus is to be willing to create a space for the change to manifest into reality. This means I will have to dump some old recipes to make space for new and better ones. Willingness takes incremental steps towards change without the black and white of success and failure. I must have the desire to change before I can effect long term change within myself.

My mother is not willing to change and so everyone is invited to her house on Tuesday, she will be serving her famous Chicken Kevorkian smothered in Bella Donna sauce.
